چکیده

In this paper we explore the possibility of using a recently discovered form of stochastic resonance termed suprathreshold stochastic resonance to improve speech comprehension in patients fitted with cochlear implants. A leaky-integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurone is used to model cochlear nerve activity when subject to electrical stimulation. This model, in principle, captures key aspects of temporal coding in analogue cochlear implants. Estimates for the information transmitted in a population of nerve fibres is obtained as a function of internal (neuronal) noise level. We conclude that SSR does indeed provide a possible mechanism by which information transmission along the cochlear nerve can be improved and thus may well lead to improved speech comprehension.

Stochastic Beamforming for Cochlear Implant Coding

Cochlear implants are prosthetic devices used to provide hearing to people who would otherwise be profoundly deaf. The deliberate addition of noise to the electrode signals could increase the amount of information transmitted, but standard cochlear implants do not replicate the noise characteristic of normal hearing because if noise is added in an uncontrolled manner with a limited number of el...

Modelling the Neural Response to Speech: Stochastic Resonance and Coding Vowel-like Stimuli

We study the effect of noise upon the transmission of information about an input signal containing two frequencies in a leaky integrate-and-fire neural model. This work extends the results of earlier studies on stochastic resonance in neural models, and particularly in models of auditory processing. It is found that the temporal coding of two sub-threshold formants can be enhanced by the presen...

The Cochlear Implant

The studies on cochlear implants have been conducted in the United States, Austria, Brasil, France, Finland, and some other countries. Up to now, this technique does not seem to have a wide spread application. Indeed it can only apply cases of deafness still presenting sufficient neural remnants to transmit the message. Moreover, the patient must be totally deaf( quasi complete loss of har cel...

Noise improves suprathreshold discrimination in cochlear-implant listeners.

The present study aimed to examine the effect of noise on vowel-like suprathreshold discrimination in cochlear-implant listeners. The task was to detect an increment in level at the middle harmonic (400 Hz) in the background of a seven-harmonic complex from 100 to 700 Hz in 100-Hz steps. The task was performed in the absence (control) and presence of a white noise presented over a 20-35-dB rang...

Optimal information transmission in nonlinear arrays through suprathreshold stochastic resonance

We examine the optimal threshold distribution in populations of noisy threshold devices. When the noise on each threshold is independent, and sufficiently large, the optimal thresholds are realized by the suprathreshold stochastic resonance effect, in which case all threshold devices are identical. This result has relevance for neural population coding, as such noisy threshold devices model the...
